The first question almost everyone asks about a paver patio is what it costs. In Oakland County, most paver patios we build land between $20 and $35 per square foot installed. A 300-square-foot patio, which is a comfortable size for a table and a few chairs, usually runs somewhere between $6,000 and $10,500. Here is what moves that number up or down, and what a suspiciously low quote is usually leaving out.
What drives the price of a paver patio
- —Paver line. Standard concrete pavers from Unilock or Belgard sit at the lower end. Premium textured or large-format pavers, clay brick, and natural bluestone push toward the top.
- —Base depth. A patio needs six or more inches of compacted aggregate base. On Oakland County clay we often go deeper. Excavation, hauling, and stone are a real share of the cost.
- —Pattern and borders. A simple running bond is fastest. Herringbone, inlays, and contrasting soldier-course borders take more cuts and more time.
- —Access. A backyard in Walled Lake or Wolverine Lake with a narrow side gate means more hand-carrying and smaller equipment, which adds labor.
- —Drainage and grading. If the yard pitches toward the house or holds water, the fix has to happen before the pavers go down. That is money well spent, but it is money.
Typical patio sizes and budgets in the Lakes Area
A small 200-square-foot patio off a sliding door usually comes in around $4,500 to $7,000. A mid-size 400-square-foot patio with a border and a seat wall often lands between $10,000 and $16,000. Larger outdoor-living projects in Novi, West Bloomfield, or Bloomfield Hills, with a fire feature, outdoor kitchen surround, and lighting, can run well past $30,000. Every one of those numbers depends on the site, which is why we walk it before we put a price on paper.
What a low quote usually leaves out
When one quote comes in at $12 per square foot and everyone else is at $25, the difference is almost never the pavers. It is the base. A crew can lay pavers on three inches of sand over undisturbed clay in a day and it will look perfect until the first spring thaw. Then it heaves, sinks at the edges, and grows weeds in the joints. We re-lay a lot of those patios. Ask any quote to spell out base depth, compaction, edge restraint, and joint sand. If those lines are missing, the price is missing them too.
Why Oakland County patios cost a little more to do right
Most of the ground from Walled Lake to Farmington Hills is heavy clay that drains slowly and swells when wet. Add 30 to 40 freeze-thaw cycles every winter and a thin base does not stand a chance. Building here means digging deeper, compacting in lifts, and pitching the surface so meltwater leaves instead of sitting under the pavers and freezing. That work is invisible when the patio is finished, and it is the entire reason the patio is still flat in year ten.
Is a paver patio worth it compared to concrete?
Stamped concrete usually costs less to install, roughly $12 to $22 per square foot. Pavers cost more up front but can be lifted and reset one at a time if anything settles, and the joints flex with the ground instead of cracking.
